Thank you for downloading this podcast from mansioningles.com

I’m going to tell you about one of my favourite hobbies. First, listen and repeat some vocabulary.

How do you say subir en inglés. Subir una montaña, for example - to climb. Repeat to climb. What about colina – hill – H-I double L. And campo – Well, campo can mean field – campo de fútbol – a football field or football pitch, or it can mean countryside. I live in the countryside, a long way from the city.

The expression to get rid of something means - deshacerse de algo. I must get rid of this old jacket.

The phrasal verb to hang out with someone is to spend time with them or pasar el tiempo. I like hanging out with her. I like spending time with her.

Another phrasal verb to take up something means empezar a hacer algo, to start doing a new sport or pastime. I took up the guitar last year or I’m thinking of taking up digital photography.

Mate is a British and Australian English word for friend, amigo. I always go out with my mates on Friday night. Do you know my mate Jimmy?

To jump on a train means to get on a train. You can jump on a bus or jump in a taxi. To jump on or in something gives the feeling that it’s easy to do and doesn’t need much effort. It’s easy to get to my flat. Just jump on a number 16 bus and you’ll be there in a few minutes.

Now listen and try to answer these questions.
1. What hobby am I talking about?
2. What benefits do I get from it?
3. What advice do I give about doing this hobby?

Are you cycling on Sunday? - You must be mad!

Have you ever been in a car behind a group of cyclists trying to climb a hill in the hot sun? You probably drive past thinking that they must be completely mad. Well, maybe the people on the bikes are thinking the same about you!

So, why do they do it? Actually, for me it’s a great way of getting rid of stress. I leave my problems in the city, and enjoy hanging out with my friends in clean air and pretty countryside. I can exercise and travel at the same time.

I took up cycling about 7 years ago and I love going to the pine forests and small villages to the north of Valencia. I go with a couple of mates from work. We simply jump on a train with our bikes and get off when we’re away from the traffic and the crowds.

It’s not a good idea to cycle too far at first. You should try a few kilometres and gradually increase the distance each trip. In hot weather, take a sun hat and sun cream for your legs and arms. It’s also important to take water with you. We also take sandwiches and some high energy snacks like nuts or chocolate because we’re gone nearly all day.

Don’t worry about those cars passing you while you’re going up the hill. Don’t give up. You’ll have much more fun than they will going down the other side!

Answer the questions.
