The Metaverse

Have you heard of the metaverse?
Maybe you heard people talking about the metaverse or you’ve seen or heard the word in the media, but what is it and where did the word come from?
The word metaverse first came to light in a science fiction book called Snow Crash that was published in 1992. The term is a combination of the words ‘meta’ and ‘universe’.
The way that metaverse is being used these days is to talk about a network of 3D virtual worlds that are tied together in the form of some kind of social connection. If that all sounds a bit vague, it’s because the metaverse hasn’t yet become part of our day to day lives and so it’s not easy to imagine what it is and how we will relate to it.
Try to imagine a virtual world that you can interact with and cross over from one area to another. You can play a VR or AR video game with a headset, but you are trapped inside the game, you can’t cross over into another space. But with the metaverse you will be able to and you’ll probably be using an avatar similar to avatars used in the 2003 platform Second Life, which has often been described as the very first metaverse.
One of the leading tech companies in the metaverse space is Facebook. In fact, in 2021, Mark Zuckerberg’s company renamed Facebook ‘Meta Platforms’ and publicly committed to developing a metaverse.
Microsoft is not far behind. They bought the VR company AltspaceVR in 2017 and have included avatars and virtual reality meetings in their Teams software.
Whatever the future holds, there are some changes coming if the tech giants are behind the metaverse. So, I’ll see you in virtual reality!
