Pelé
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as
Pelé, was a Brazilian footballer who was widely regarded as one of the
greatest players of all time. He was born on October the 23rd, 1940, in
Três Corações, Brazil. Pelé's love for football began at a young age and
he began playing for local clubs in his hometown before being signed by
Santos FC at the age of 15.
Pelé quickly made a name for himself with his exceptional skills and
goalscoring ability, and helped lead Santos FC to numerous titles in the
Brazilian league. In 1958, at the age of just 17, he was called up to
the Brazilian national team and played a key role in their victory at
the 1958 World Cup. He would go on to win the World Cup two more times,
in 1962 and 1970.
In addition to his success at the international level, Pelé was also a
dominant force in club football. He spent the majority of his career
with Santos FC, winning a total of six Brazilian league titles and two
Copa Libertadores. He also had a brief stint with the New York Cosmos in
the North American Soccer League (NASL) in the 1970s, where he helped
popularize the sport in the United States.
Throughout his career, Pelé scored a staggering 1,281 goals in 1,363
games, and was known for his speed, technique, and impressive
goalscoring ability. He was also known for his sportsmanship and
graciousness on and off the field. In his later years, Pelé became a
global ambassador for football and was involved in various charitable
and humanitarian efforts.
Pelé retired from professional football in 1977. He was inducted into
the Brazilian Football Museum Hall of Fame and was named a UNESCO
Goodwill Ambassador in 1995. In 1999, he was named one of the 100 most
influential people of the 20th century by Time magazine.
Pelé passed away on the 29 of December, 2022 at the age of 82. He will
always be remembered as one of the best footballers the world has ever
seen.
