ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a chatbot developed by OpenAI that uses
a variant of the GPT language model. GPT, in case you’re wondering,
stands for Generative Pre-training Transformer.So, there you go!
It has been trained on a large dataset of human conversations and can
generate human-like responses to a wide range of inputs. ChatGPT was
launched on November the 30th, 2022.
Now, one of the ways that ChatGPT can be particularly helpful for
language learners is its ability to maintain continuity in conversation.
So, when practicing a new language, it can be challenging to keep a
conversation going, as it can be difficult to think of the right words
and phrases to use. ChatGPT's ability to "remember" previous statements
and use them to inform its responses can help language learners practice
their conversation skills in a more natural and coherent manner.
In addition, ChatGPT can be used to provide instant feedback and
corrections for language learners. If a learner makes a mistake or uses
an incorrect word, ChatGPT can provide a corrected version in its
response, helping the learner improve their language skills over time.
It can translate, answer questions about grammar, clarify difficult
language points by giving examples in context and create vocabulary
lists around a topic.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. How much does it cost? Well, at the
moment it’s absolutely free, although this may change in the future.
There are other AI chatbots out there, like Jasper, that charge about
$100 per month.
One thing that really impressed me was the speed at which I got a reply
to a question. It seems like the chatbot is hardly thinking at all and
it spits out information and responses in the blink of an eye.
The only time, so far, since I’ve been testing it when paused to think
for a few seconds before relying was when I asked it the question,
‘What's the worst thing about ChatGPT?
It thought about this for a while and then replied, ‘One potential
drawback of ChatGPT is that it is a chatbot and does not have the
ability to think or understand language in the same way that humans do.
As a result, it may not always generate appropriate or coherent
responses, especially when given unusual or unexpected inputs.’
Overall, ChatGPT is a useful tool for language learners looking to
improve their conversation skills and fluency in writing. Its ability to
generate appropriate responses, maintain continuity in conversation, and
provide instant feedback make it a valuable asset for those looking to
learn a new language.
