The old Welshman came home near sunrise, covered
with candle- grease, stained with clay, and almost tired out. He found Huck
still in the bed that had been given to him, and very sick with fever. The
doctors were all at the cave, so the Widow Douglas came and took care of the
sick boy.
She said she would do her best by him, because, whether he was good, bad, or
mixed, he was the Lord’s, and nothing that was the Lord’s was a thing to be
ignored.
The Welshman said Huck had good parts in him, and the widow said:
“You can trust that. That’s the Lord’s sign. He don’t take it off. He never does.
Puts it somewhere on every creature that comes from his hands.”
Early in the morning groups of tired men began to come back to the village, but
the strongest of the people kept looking. All the news that could be learned was
that far parts of the cave were being searched that had never been seen before;
that every corner and crack was going to be carefully checked; that wherever one
walked through the puzzle of paths, lights were to be seen moving here and there
in the distance, and shouts and gun-shots sent their empty sounds to the ear
down the dark halls.
In one place, far from the part usually visited by tourists, the names “BECKY &
TOM” had been found written on the rocky wall with candle- smoke, and near by a
dirty piece of ribbon.
Mrs. Thatcher knew the ribbon and cried over it. She said it was the last thing
she would ever have of her child; and that no other memory of her could ever be
so dear, because this one left last from the living body before the terrible
death came.
Some said that now and then, in the cave, a far-away dot of light would shine,
and then a happy shout would come out and a group of men go running down the
noisy hall–and then a sad disappointment always followed; the children were not
there; it was only a searcher’s light.
Three awful days and nights passed slowly, and the village became very sad. No
one had spirit for anything. The sudden finding, just made, that the owner of
the Temperance Tavern had free alcohol, barely made the public excited, huge as
the fact was.
In a clear moment, Huck weakly talked about taverns, and finally asked–faintly
fearing the worst–if anything had been found at the Temperance Tavern since he
had been sick.
“Yes,” said the woman. Huck woke up in bed, scared: “What? What was it?”
“Alcohol!–and the place has been closed. Calm down, child–you scared me so much!”
“Only tell me one thing–only one–please! Was it Tom Sawyer who found it?”
The woman started crying. “Be quiet, quiet, child, quiet! I’ve told you before,
you must NOT talk. You are very, very sick!”
So they only found alcohol; there would have been a lot of noise if it had been
the gold. So the treasure was gone forever–gone forever! But why was she crying?
It was strange that she was crying.
Huck thought about these things, but he was very tired and he fell asleep. The
woman said to herself: “There–he’s asleep, poor thing. Tom Sawyer find it! I
wish someone could find Tom Sawyer! Oh, there aren’t many left, now, that have
hope enough, or strength enough, either, to keep looking.”
