Before you read the text, read the following comprehension questions.
1. Why did Tom doubt that what had happened had
not been real?
2. What did Tom think that burried treasure was?
3. What was Huck doing when Tom found him?
4. Why could Number Two not be the number of a house?
5. What did they decide the number two might represent?
Now read the text and answer the questions.
Tom dreamt about the day’s adventure and he did
not sleep well.
Four times he had his hands on that rich treasure and four times it had slipped
through his fingers.
He woke up and thought about how unlucky he had been. As he lay in the early
morning recalling the incidents of his great adventure, he noticed that they
seemed curiously subdued and far away. It was as if they had happened in another
world, or a long time ago.
Then it occurred to him that the great adventure itself must be a dream!
There was one very strong argument in favor of this idea; there was so much
money that it could not have been real! He had never seen as much as fifty
dollars in one place mass before, and he was like all boys of his age. He
thought that money in "hundreds" and "thousands" were exaggerations and did not
exist in the world.
He never imagined for a moment that such a large amount of money as a hundred
dollars was to be found in actual money in any one's possession.
His idea of buried treasure was a few coins and a handful of dollar bills.
But slowly the things that happened during his adventure became sharper and
clearer as he thought about them and he soon came to the conclusion that it
might not have been a dream after all.
He quickly ate breakfast and went to find Huck. Huck was sitting on the side of
a boat. His feet were in the water and he was looking very sad.
Tom decided to wait until Huck spoke about what happened yesterday. If he said
nothing, then the adventure would surely have been only a dream.
"Hello, Huck!"
"Hello, yourself."
Silence, for a minute.
"Tom, if we’d left the tools at the dead tree, we'd have got all the money.
Isn’t it a shame!"
"'It’s not a dream, then. It’s not a dream! Somehow I almost wish it was to tell
you the truth, Huck."
"What wasn’t a dream?"
"Oh, that thing yesterday. I been kind of thinking it was."
"A dream! If those stairs hadn't broken and fallen down, you'd have seen how
much of a dream it was!
I've had enough dreams all night. I dreamt about that patch-eyed Spanish devil
going for me, damn him!"
"No, not damn him. FIND him! Track the money!"
"Tom, we'll never find him. A guy only has one chance for such a fortune, and
that one's lost. I’d feel very scared if I was to see him, anyway."
"Well, so would I, but I'd like to see him, anyway, and follow him to his Number
Two."
"Number Two. Yes, that's it. I been thinking 'about that. But I don’t understand
it. What do you think it is?"
"I don’t know. It's too deep. Maybe it's the number of a house, Huck!"
"No, Tom, that’s not it. If it is, it’s not in this small town. They aren’t even
any numbers here."
"That’s true. Let me think for a minute. Perhaps it's the number of a room in a
tavern, you know!"
"Oh, that's it! They are only two taverns. We can find out quick."
"You stay here, Huck, until I come back."
... to be continued!
