Pronunciation – The '-ed' ending on past
regular verbs
The –ed ending is added to regular
verbs in the simple past and the past participle. It can be difficult to
pronounce correctly, even at advanced level. Luckily, there are some
guidelines to help you pronounce this correctly.
There are three different ways to pronounce the –ed ending:
1. /t/ after voiceless sounds (you can identify a
voiceless sound by putting your hand on your head or your throat and
checking for vibration. If there’s no vibration, it’s a voiceless
sound). Examples of voiceless sounds are:
/p/ play - /s/ say - /th/ three - /ch/ chips
- /h/ hello - /sh/ wash
Here are some verbs that end with the /t/ sound after a voiceless sound:
2. /d/ after a voiced sound (voiced sounds can be
identified by feeling vibration when you place your hand on your head or
your throat). Here are some examples:
/j/ July - /d/ dad - /g/ give - /b/ baby -
/th/ these - /n/ nine
Here are some verbs that end with the /d/ sound after a voiced sound:
a) Someone who always
agrees with his or her superiors.
b) Something done secretly (and usually illegally) in the business
world.
c) Something that is modern and technologically advanced.
d) Conversation about unimportant topics that do not offend people (the
weather, sport, traffic, for example).
e) If you do this you convince someone to do something.

Estoy desayunando y en este momento son las nueve en punto. Es posible

b.) También puede indicar una acción planificada que se desarrollará en
un futuro.

c.) Puede indicar una acción habitual que se
repite frecuentemente. En este caso, suele acompañarse de adverbios de
frecuencia ('often', 'usually', etc.)

usually went for a walk in the park during her lunch
hour. Nearly every day she saw a very old man who was
always in the park. He had white hair and a long white
beard and a very contented expression. She sometimes
nodded to him or said hello and he always smiled back
very happily. One day, she decided to stop and speak to him.
‘Excuse me,’ said Lucy, ‘I often see you here. You
always seem very cheerful and you’re never sick!
What’s your secret for a long and happy life?’
‘My secret?’ asked the old man, smiling at her ‘I don’t have
a secret.’
‘But how often do you take exercise?’ asked Lucy.
‘I never take any exercise, young lady.’

What do you know about the Cambridge English Exams?
The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) offer a
wide variety of exams for English students.
The exams can be divided into exams for children (that Cambridge call
‘young learners’), academic and professional English, business English
and general English which includes English for schools.
The Cambridge exams are tied to the Common European Framework of
Reference for Languages (CEFR) and you can see how each exam fits into
the CEFR framework on the
Cambridge exams website.
The very first Cambridge exam took place in 1913. There were 3
candidates who took the 12-hour exam, and they all failed! However, a
lot has happened since then.
The qualifications offered by Cambridge are recognised by universities,
employers and organizations all over the world and the Cambridge English
Language Assessment board operates in 130 countries and has over 4
million exam candidates per year.
Should you consider taking a Cambridge exam?
Absolutely! Not only are Cambridge qualifications the most recognised
English qualification in the world, but studying for an exam, at
whatever level, gives you a goal and an objective for your studies. You
have direction in your learning and, even if you don’t need an English
qualification at the moment, who knows when it will be useful for you in
the future?
Which exam should you take?
Obviously, this depends on your area of study, interest and work. If you
are in business, it obviously makes sense to study for the Cambridge
business exam, for example.
As far as general English is concerned, employers often ask for a
minimum level of B2 which is the Cambridge English First (FCE) exam.
This qualification shows the employer that you have the minimum level
necessary to work in English in a wide range of scenarios.
